Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi says Israel plans to expel the Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip and forcefully send them to Somaliland.
Reacting to Israel’s move to recognize Somaliland and recent developments in Gaza, Fiqi told Al Jazeera in an interview on Saturday that Tel Aviv has devised a plan to expel the Gaza Palestinians to the breakaway region of Somaliland.
He said Somalia has “confirmed information that Israel has a plan to transfer Palestinians and to send them to [Somaliland].”
The Israeli move is a “serious violation” of international law, he added.
Fiqi told Al Jazeera in an earlier interview that Somaliland had accepted the three conditions set by Israel for its recognition: relocation of Palestinians in Somaliland, establishment of a military base on the coast of the Gulf of Aden, and joining the so-called Abraham Accords to normalize ties with the occupying regime.
He urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to withdraw Tel Aviv’s diplomatic recognition of the “separatist region,” describing the move, announced late last year, as a “direct attack” on Somalia’s sovereignty.
He said the Israeli regime was pursuing a strategy of fragmenting regional states, pointing out that Tel Aviv’s recognition of Somaliland was part of a bigger plot.
“Israel has long had goals and plans to divide countries — maybe for 20 years — and it wants to divide the map of [West Asia] and control its countries. This is why they found this separatist group in northwestern Somalia.”
The Israeli foreign minister told the regime’s Channel 14 last week that the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza to Somaliland “was not part of our agreement.”
Gideon Saar said, “We have a lot of topics in the field of politics, security, development, and others that we will advance with Somaliland … And I can say this is not part of our agreement.”
Saar did not provide any further details about their agreement. The Israeli regime is the only entity to recognize Somaliland as an independent state separate from Somalia.
Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said that his country is firmly opposed to any attempts at the forced displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
Mohamud emphasized that his country will never become a stage for aggression against other nations and opposes the transfer of wars to its territory.
He said Tel Aviv’s move to recognize Somaliland as an independent entity is the gravest violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and rejected any attempts to drag regional crises into Somalia.
