A media campaign advocating for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails has been officially launched to raise international awareness about the hardships faced by thousands of detainees and to foster greater global solidarity for their cause.
Organizers, in their announcement of the campaign’s launch on Wednesday, stated that the initiative seeks to broaden the reach of solidarity and elevate the plight of Palestinian prisoners to the forefront of global consciousness, labeling it as one of the most pressing and profoundly humanitarian issues today.
The “Save the Prisoners” campaign is organized by Palestinian prisoner solidarity networks and advocacy groups, with Samidoun: Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) among the most prominent organizers.
The campaign said that Palestinian prisoners endure severe and inhumane conditions, which involve serious violations such as torture, prolonged solitary confinement, denial of medical care and family visits, administrative detention without charges, and the incarceration of women and children under degrading circumstances that breach international laws and conventions.
The statement said the six-month campaign aims to bring together legal, humanitarian, and media initiatives on both Arab and international fronts.
It is focused on exposing the systematic crimes against detainees, advocating for better detention conditions, and calling for an end to the isolation and torture policies enforced by Israeli authorities.
The campaign also demands the urgent release of women and children held behind bars, emphasizing that safeguarding the human dignity of prisoners is a fundamental right that cannot be limited by time.
Organizers said this campaign is far more than just a fleeting gesture of solidarity. It stands as a profound moral and humanitarian duty, they said.
It conveys a powerful global message that the plight of prisoners is intricately linked to the struggles of an entire people seeking freedom and justice, they stated.
The campaign called on human rights organizations, media outlets, civil society groups, social media influencers, and all individuals with a sense of justice around the world to take an active role in this initiative.
The aim is to keep the plight of the prisoners at the forefront of global discussions until every detainee achieves their complete and unconditional freedom, according to the statement.
The conditions under which Palestinian inmates are held by Israel are deeply concerning, marked by unsatisfactory hygiene practices. Additionally, these detainees continue to face ongoing torture, mistreatment, and systemic oppression.
Palestinian prisoners have repeatedly engaged in prolonged hunger strikes as a form of protest against their perceived unjust detention.
Human rights organizations report that Israel persists in breaching the rights and freedoms guaranteed to detainees under the Fourth Geneva Convention and international law.
