An Israeli soldier has taken his own life at a military base in the northern part of the Israeli-occupied territories, raising the total number of troops who have died by suicide to 61 since the onset of the genocidal war in the Gaza Strip.

The Hebrew-language newspaper Haaretz reported on Tuesday that the soldier, serving as a tracker in regular military duty, shot himself inside the base. He sustained critical injuries and was later pronounced dead that evening.

Shortly before that, the Israeli army announced that a soldier had suffered severe injuries from gunfire at a military base and was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The army further stated that the military police had launched an investigation into the matter.

The development comes as a reserve officer from the Givati Brigade committed suicide on December 4 after experiencing severe psychological distress linked to his participation in the Gaza war.

The newspaper Israel Hayom reported at the time that a 28-year-old Israeli reserve officer took his own life, probably as a result of post-traumatic stress disorder, which may have been exacerbated by ground offensives inside the Gaza Strip.

Israel Hayom reported that shortly before the incident, he had expressed feeling unable to continue living, describing a sense of destruction and loss. However, no additional details were provided regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.

On December 8, the Israeli ministry of military affairs said it has provided medical treatment to nearly 22,000 wounded soldiers since October 2023.

Approximately 58 percent of those receiving treatment at rehabilitation centers are dealing with mental health conditions, according to the ministry.

Since October 2023, Israel has killed at least 70,667 Palestinians, the majority being women and children, with 171,151 others injured, in Gaza.
