Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says the BRICS group of emerging economies plays a strategic role in enhancing political and economic interaction and countering unilateralism in the international system.
Pezeshkian made the remarks in a meeting with Speaker of the Ethiopian House of Peoples Representatives Tagesse Chafo in Tehran on Saturday.
Ethiopia and Iran are both members of the BRICS.
"BRICS can provide a new model of communication based on mutual respect for national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the diverse cultures and civilizations of countries. It can pave the way for just and balanced cooperation at a global level,” he said.
The Iranian president expressed the country’s keenness to expand ties with Ethiopia in various fields, including the economic, diplomatic, cultural, and security sectors.
He stressed the importance of activating the joint cooperation commission, identifying complementary capacities and moving towards dialogue and understanding based on mutual interests.
Pezeshkian also expressed Iran’s readiness to play a role in stabilizing sustainable peace and security with the participation of all countries in the region.
Iran’s approach is based on establishing a world filled with peace, security, and free from war and violence, he emphasized.
"We believe that conscious individuals endowed with a deep human understanding have never sought war and will never do so, and prefer the path of dialogue and cooperation over confrontation,” Pezeshkian pointed out.
Chafo, for his part, said his country is interested in developing relations with Iran, especially in the diplomatic, economic, and security fields.
He added that both parliaments will use all their legal and supervisory capacities and make efforts to prepare the ground for increasing diplomatic cooperation.
The top Ethiopian parliamentarian noted that Iran plays a crucial role in establishing peace and security in West Asia.
Ethiopia is also striving to play a constructive role in the Horn of Africa, he said, adding bilateral cooperation on promoting peace and security can have a positive and lasting impact on peace and stability in West Asia and the African continent.
