IRGC carries out large-scale cloud seeding operation

Iran’s IRGC carries out eight cloud-seeding sorties to enhance rainfall across targeted regions.

Iran’s elite military force, the IRGC, has conducted a large-scale cloud-seeding operation in an effort to ease the ongoing precipitation crisis in the country.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said in a Wednesday statement that it had carried out eight cloud-seeding sorties across Iran, ranging from areas above Urmia Lake in the northwestern Azerbaijan region to the skies over the arid central province of Yazd.

The IRGC noted that the operation had been planned for days, with experts performing detailed assessments to identify clouds suitable for seeding.

It added that the mission was particularly rare because it targeted cold clouds, requiring pilots to perform specialized maneuvers deep inside cloud formations.

Expert pilots from the force’s aerospace division were assigned to the complex operation, the statement said.

The involvement of the IRGC in cloud-seeding activities marks its first such participation in years and aligns with its mission to support government agencies in technological and scientific initiatives.

The operation also comes amid a severe water crisis in Iran, which has raised concerns over drinking water supplies in several major cities, including the capital, Tehran.

Iran is experiencing one of its worst droughts in decades, prompting authorities in Tehran and other large cities to enforce nighttime water-pressure reductions.

The Organization for Development and Use of Meteoric Water Technologies, a subsidiary of the Iranian Energy Ministry established four years ago, announced in mid-November that it had conducted its first cloud-seeding operation for the 2025–2026 water year.

The organization said at the time that it was analyzing various rain systems to enable further operations, adding that the government plans to continue cloud-seeding efforts until May next year.
