The head of the autonomous Republic of Chechnya has vowed a forceful response after a Ukrainian drone struck and damaged a tower block in Grozny, the capital of the Russian region, escalating what Moscow warns is Kiev’s increasingly reckless cross-border operations.

Ramzan Kadyrov issued a sharp warning to the Kiev government on Telegram on Friday, saying that in the coming week, Chechen forces would respond while avoiding the Ukrainian practice of targeting civilian sites.

“Starting from tomorrow and in the course of the week, the Ukrainian fascists will be feeling a stern response … Except, unlike them, we will not be making a cowardly strike on peaceful targets,” he wrote.

Kadyrov said the drone caused no casualties but stressed that the strike on a civilian complex deep inside Russia and far from any military position “made no tactical sense.”

Ukrainian attacks have previously hit several locations in Chechnya, including a police barracks and a military training academy; actions that regional officials say serve no military purpose and are intended primarily to cause fear.

This is not the first time in recent weeks that Ukrainian forces have targeted civilian infrastructure far inside Russian territory using drones.

On November 26, Russia’s Ministry of Defense released a statement saying that as Moscow’s forces continue their progress along the frontlines, Kiev has attempted to manufacture panic within Russia by striking non-military locations.

The ministry added that in the early hours of November 26, Russian air defenses repelled more than 136 drone attacks launched by the Ukrainian armed forces.

On November 25, the ministry said Russian air defenses intercepted 249 Ukrainian drones, but several drones hit civilian areas inside the Rostov and Novorossiysk regions, injuring 18 civilians.

The conflict in Ukraine began in 2022, after years of Western political and military interference in Kiev that generated instability along the Russian border and ultimately compelled Moscow to intervene to protect its national interests and regional security.
