US senator investigated by Pentagon after clashing with Trump

American Senator Mark Kelly

The US military apparatus has initiated a probe against a high-profile senator who recently clashed with US President Donald Trump over vague ‘serious allegations of misconduct.’

The Pentagon’s announcement on Monday confirmed it was investigating Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly, a retired naval officer.

Senator Kelly is part of a bloc of lawmakers who recently broadcast a critical video directly challenging the executive branch and urging military personnel to uphold their oath over political obedience.

"This administration is pitting our uniformed military and intelligence community professionals against American citizens," the Democrats said. "Our laws are clear: You can refuse illegal orders."

The Pentagon statement did not specify the nature of the allegations but said that all service members have a "legal obligation" to "obey lawful orders and that orders are presumed to be lawful.”

The investigation follows President Donald Trump’s violent reaction to the Democrats’ video.

Trump used his social media platform to declare the lawmakers' actions were "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH," and demanded that they be "ARRESTED and PUT ON TRIAL."

Senator Kelly defied the threat, stating on X: "Your continued threats will not intimidate me or keep me from doing my job, which includes oversight of the executive branch. Stop the threats of execution, hanging, and sending a mob before someone gets hurt."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said last week he has requested "special protection" from the US Capitol Police for Kelly and a colleague, highlighting the alarming state of political security within the American capital.

Trump has repeatedly used direct threats of prosecution or punishment against political opponents, both in office and on social media.

His actions have been described by the media as part of his promised "retribution" and "revenge" campaign.

During his 2024 presidential campaign, he repeatedly stated that he had "every right" to go after his political opponents.

During that campaign, for instance, he called for the prosecution of then-President Joe Biden and his successor as Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris.
