The family of British journalist Sami Hamdi says he has boarded a flight back to the UK after being detained by the US Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during his visit to the United States.
Hamdi was taken into custody at San Francisco International Airport while on a speaking tour across the country.
During a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) gala in Sacramento, he had slammed Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and he was scheduled to address another CAIR event in Florida.
According to Zahraa Billoo, executive director of CAIR–San Francisco Bay Area, Hamdi entered the US on October 19 with a valid visitor visa, which was revoked without his knowledge on October 24.
Despite Homeland Security’s claims on X that Hamdi supports terrorism and threatens “the safety of Americans,” he has not been charged with any crime or national security violation.
CAIR–California CEO Hussam Ayloush condemned the detention, saying Hamdi was punished for speaking out against Israel’s war crimes in Palestine and “should never have spent a single night in an ICE cell.”
