The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has vowed a “fitting and decisive” response to perpetrators of a brutal terrorist attack in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan, which killed several Sunni tribal leaders.

A prominent Sunni community leader, Mullah Kamal Salahi-zehi, was assassinated on Sunday in a public square in Iranshahr after unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle.

Salahi-zehi was widely regarded as a mediator who had worked to promote peace and reconciliation among Baluch tribes. He was also known for his firm stance against armed groups and networks linked to the Israeli and Western-backed elements.

In a statement on Sunday, the Quds Headquarters of the IRGC strongly condemned the recent crime by terrorist groups that killed Salahi-zehi and several other prominent leaders and heads of Sunni tribes in Sistan and Baluchestan.

"The perpetrators and masterminds of these crimes will soon be punished for their disgraceful actions and the powerful security and military forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will decisively give a fitting response to these brutal acts,” the statement said.

It added that the wise people in the province will continue to stand against the conspiracies of the enemies with vigilance and unity.

It noted that enemies are carrying out such “blind and unfair” measures to disrupt national unity and peaceful coexistence among brave Iranians in the southeastern parts of the country.

The IRGC said mercenary groups affiliated with the Israeli regime once again revealed their “evil and anti-Islamic” nature by committing such crimes.

"Such crimes will never disrupt the firm resolve of the Iranian nation and the exemplary unity among Shia and Sunni [Muslims] in Sistan and Baluchestan,” it pointed out.

Sistan and Baluchestan province, which borders Pakistan, has witnessed several terror attacks targeting both civilians and security forces over the past years.

Terrorist groups carrying out attacks against Iranian interests in the southeastern and southwestern parts of the country are believed to be linked to foreign intelligence services.
