Over a dozen New York police officers sent to Israeli-occupied territories for training: Report
More than a dozen New York police officers are on a training trip to the Israeli-occupied territories, even as Israel wages its ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, a report says.
US police officers have already shown a heavy-handed response against pro-Palestine protesters on student campuses and in the state, and in New York City.
The 13 officials are now said to be studying so-called “security issues” of the Israeli regime, undergoing “counterterrorism training to protect Jewish communities,” and being lectured on “anti-Semitism” — a label routinely weaponized to silence criticism of Israel’s crimes.
According to a report in JNS, Israel’s Ministry for Diaspora Affairs has been running the training programme for US law enforcement officials for six years.
The programme has been dubbed “Birthright for American police chiefs,” in reference to free trips to occupied territories offered to Jewish diaspora.
The latest course is reportedly the second since the genocidal war on Gaza began in October 2023.
US police have been trained by the Israelis for more than two decades, resulting in thousands of officers learning crowd control, use of force, and surveillance from Israel’s police, military, and spy services, according to reports by rights groups.
While pro-Israel groups privately fund some of these trips, the historical Zionist education of US police is taxpayer-funded, the reports added.
Activists pointed out that more than 100 Minneapolis Police Department officers were tactically trained on using one’s knee to restrain civilians at a "counterterrorism event" at the Israeli Consulate in Chicago in 2012, led by the Israeli military and police.
The Israeli lobby within US law enforcement bodies has fomented a dramatic rate of police brutality and irresponsible use of power. Activists report that the Israeli military teaches American police officers illegal and unconstitutional policing tactics for training its officers.
Based on a Washington Post report in 2024, US police kill at least 1,000 of its citizens annually, underscoring the difficulty of reducing such incidents despite sustained public attention.
US police killed at least 10,429 US citizens between 2015 and 2024, the report said.
