US tariff hike deals blow to Kashmir’s carpet industry

The recent decision by the United States to impose a 50-percent tariff on Indian goods has sent shock waves through several export-driven industries across India. However, few have been as impacted as the carpet industry of Indian-administered Kashmir.
Famed for its craftsmanship, Kashmir’s handmade carpets are considered a prized possession in homes across the world. But they are now at risk of becoming unaffordable luxuries. With the United States being the largest importer of Kashmiri carpets, the new tax hike is threatening to unravel what remains of this centuries-old tradition.
