Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed condolences to the prime minister and the people of Pakistan following the tragic loss of life and injuries caused by the devastating floods.

In a message on Saturday, Pezeshkian expressed the sincere sympathy of the Iranian government and people to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as well as the government and people of Pakistan, following the devastating flood in parts of the neighboring country.

He also emphasized Iran’s readiness for any cooperation and humanitarian and relief assistance to alleviate the suffering of the victims, and wished the injured and those affected by the incident a speedy recovery.

At least 321 people are dead in north-west Pakistan after two days of intense rains and floods, local officials said on Saturday.

Most of the deaths, 307, were recorded in Buner District of the mountainous Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan, with another five killed in the northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan and nine in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

The worsening situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has prompted the Pakistani Prime Minister to convene an urgent meeting, with the military also placed on standby to support the civilian government in handling the emergency.

Rescue efforts and clearing of blocked roads were ongoing with the release of emergency funds, officials said, adding that the heavy rains would continue until August 21.

The yearly monsoon season supplies South Asia with 70-80% of its total annual rainfall, crucial for farming and food stability but also responsible for significant damage.
