Israeli authorities have detained an elderly woman accused of conspiring to carry out a bomb attack targeting Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, amid rising public anger and escalating political tensions over the Tel Aviv regime’s handling of the war on Gaza.

Israel's public broadcaster KAN reported on Wednesday that police arrested a 70-year-old woman two weeks ago on suspicion of plotting to attack Netanyahu with an explosive device.

The suspect, a resident of the central part of the occupied territories, was interrogated by Israeli police and Shin Bet, the regime's notorious spy agency.

Details of the case remain under wraps amid a media blackout, but KAN reported that the woman is expected to face formal charges for “criminal and terrorism-related offenses” as early as Thursday.

The case marks a rare instance of an alleged domestic assassination plot against Netanyahu and unfolds amid heightened political tensions across the occupied territories.

More than 20 months after Israel invaded the Gaza Strip, critics observe that the Israeli military hasn’t met either of its goals of destroying the Hamas resistance movement and rescuing all of the remaining Israeli captives.

A series of surveys shows that most Israelis have lost confidence in Netanyahu’s regime and would like to see new political leadership.

Israelis are also concerned that Netanyahu’s approach to the Gaza war and his inability to reach a captive deal or agree to some kind of cease-fire may be driven by his desire to stay in power.

Netanyahu is also facing several corruption-related charges and is seeking to delay his trials, with his defense team arguing that the ongoing war leaves him little time to appear in court.

Hamas has said that the "absolute victory" that  Netanyahu speaks of is nothing but an illusion to mislead his public.

Meanwhile, Palestinian resistance fighters in recent days have killed and injured a number of Israeli occupation soldiers in a series of ambushes, amid the regime’s escalated aggression on the besieged territory.
