Australia police arrest man after reports of stabbing in western Sydney
Australian police have arrested a man after reports of a multiple-stabbing incident at a church in western Sydney.
Police authorities and local media reported on Monday that a church leader and several worshipers were stabbed during a service at the church in Walkley, about 30 kilometers west of the Sydney central business district.
The unidentified male suspect is assisting police with inquiries, a police statement said.
The injured people suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are being treated by paramedics, police said.
Videos of the incident circulating online showed a man lunging and stabbing a speaker.
The episode is the second stabbing incident in Sydney after a knife attack at a mall in Bondi area on Saturday.
The 40-year-old offender, Joel Cauchi, who had a history of mental illness, killed six people and injured at least 12 others in a frenzied stabbing attack at Westfield Bondi Junction mall.
Cauchi had moved from Queensland to New South Wales only a month before the Saturday afternoon stabbing spree.
In a statement issued on Sunday and distributed by police, Cauchi’s family said they were “absolutely devastated.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims and those still undergoing treatment at this time.”
The mass stabbing has prompted a massive police investigation.
