US promises Ukraine enduring support despite row in Congress
The United States says Washington will continue supplying Ukraine with weapons, despite a row in Congress on approving Joe Biden's new funding package.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelensky met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan.
"We are determined to sustain our support for Ukraine and we're working very closely with Congress in order to work to do that," Blinken said.
"I know our European colleagues will do the same thing," Blinken told Zelenskyy as they met at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
And Sullivan told Zelensky that the Biden administration and its allies were determined “to ensure that Russia fails and Ukraine wins.”
In his address, Zelensky said that Ukraine counts on Washington’s support. “We really count on your support – continuing your huge support.”
The US has sent some $44 billion in military aid to Ukraine since Russia launched its “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine in February 2022.
Zelensky and Biden requested $61 billion from Congress for arming Ukraine by the end of the year, but the administration has struggled to get Congress to approve the funding in the face of opposition from Republican lawmakers.
Zelensky, however, said that questions on support were "only a matter of weeks." "I believe we can also manage the question of aid in Congress."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also said that the West must not let up supplying Kiev with weapons and money if it wants Kiev to succeed.
“Ukraine can prevail in this war but we must continue to empower their resistance.”
European leaders, however, failed to reach a deal on a long-term financial package in mid-December after Hungary vetoed $55 billion in the bloc’s aid for Kiev.
