Interview with Sheikh Zakzaky

Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky is a prominent Islamic scholar and the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. He was born in Zaria in Kaduna State of Nigeria in 1953.

Both his parents were Islamic scholars and Sheikh Zakzaky had memorized the whole Quran by the time he was 14. He mastered Arabic and soared in Islamic studies before entering the university and majoring in economics and government studies.

In the 1970s, during the peak of communist activism on university campuses around the world, he proposed a different path as an activist. It was Islam in which he said could be the path forward for all aspects of life.

He founded the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in the 1980s while still at the university. It was a small grassroots movement, but the organization has now grown to have millions of followers. Some estimates say that as many as 20 million people are part of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria now.

His movement has been unique in that it has attracted people from various religious backgrounds. Christians, Sunni Muslims, Shia Muslims and even people who are not religious are part of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.
