A US shooting incident at Morgan State University in the northeastern city of Baltimore has left five people injured, including four students, police say.

Baltimore Police arrived at the scene after reports of an active shooter situation on Tuesday night, where they found multiple victims in the campus.

"BPD is on scene of an active shooter situation in the 1700 block of Argonne Drive," police shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, at the time. "We’re asking everyone to shelter in place and avoid the area."

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at a news conference on Wednesday that the victims, four men and one woman aged 18 to 22, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Worley went on to say that multiple windows were shattered, prompting police to activate active shooter response protocols, adding that investigation continues into the shooting.

Morgan State University also asked students via social media, to "shelter in place."

However, around 11:45 p.m., city police tweeted that the incident was no longer an "active shooter situation" and university officials also said that the shelter-in-place order on campus had been lifted.

A suspect has not yet been identified in the incident, and police officials say they could not confirm whether there were one or multiple shooters.

The latest development comes on the heels of a similar incident back in July, when a mass shooting at an apartment block in Baltimore killed at least two people and wounded dozens -- three critically.

Although shootings across the US are quite common due to its laws allowing the purchase and carrying of guns, mass shootings and the use of machine guns have become a growing concern in the country.

US lawmakers, however, have done very little to enact laws to control the sale of arms and the growing gun violence.

US surpasses 500 mass shootings in 2023

New data from the Gun Violence Archive has revealed that 500 mass shootings have taken place so far in 2023, after a shooting incident occurred in Denver over the weekend.

Data from the Gun Violence Archive — which logs mass shootings in cases where there are four or more individuals wounded or killed in a shooting — found the total number of mass shootings in 2023 is so far lower than totals from the past three years, but already higher than in 2019, which had 414 mass shootings, and in 2018, which had 335 mass shootings.

According to the Gun Violence Archive’s data, 2021 had the highest-ever number of mass shootings in the US, with 689 reported mass shootings.

The number of mass shootings fell in 2022 to 645, although data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) showed a rise in the total number of Americans wounded in such events between 2021 and 2022.
