Asian Games: Iran wins two medals in discus throw

Iranian discus throwers Hossein Rasouli (L) and Ehsan Haddadi wave Iran’s flags after winning gold and silver medals in Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, on October 2, 2023.

Two Iranian discus throwers have won medals at the athletics competitions of the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Hossein Rasouli won discus gold with a throw of 62.4 meters on Monday, according to a report by the official IRNA news agency.

Ehsan Haddadi, who was seeking to retain his four discus titles in Asian Games, snatched silver with a throw of 60.4 meters, the same report said.

Rasouli’s gold was Iran’s fifth in the Asian Games since the continental multi-sport event started on September 23.

It allowed Iran to move up two places to 11th in the medal count table of the Games.

The Iranian athletes have also won 14 silver and 15 bronze medals in the Games and many expect the tally could increase with the start of wrestling, karate and weightlifting competitions in the coming days.

Rasouli, 23, had finished sixth in this year’s Asian discus throw championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

Haddadi, a 2012 London Olympics silver medalist and a five-time continental champion, had said earlier on Monday that his throw at Hangzhou may be his last in the jersey of Iranian national team. His is now 38.
