Firefighters drain waterlogged roads, evacuate trapped people as typhoon-induced downpours hit Guangdong
Following the landfall of super Typhoon Saola, the ninth typhoon of this year, in south China's Guangdong Province on Friday, firefighters have been striving to clear flooded roads and evacuate stranded residents to safety.
In the southern part of Shanwei City, the intensified typhoon bringing in torrential downpours prompted the release of a red alert, the highest-level warning, on Friday.
The heavy rainfall caused widespread road water-logging as fallen leaves and debris blocked road drains. Emergency personnel swiftly responded by clearing roadside ditches and opening manhole covers to facilitate the rapid drainage of floods.
On the seaside avenue, a large tree was toppled by the strong winds, obstructing half of the road. Firefighters collaborated with street management personnel, employing chainsaws to divide the tree into manageable sections to clear the road surface.
On Saturday morning, the eastern coast of Zhuhai City, specifically the Lover's Road, continued to experience strong winds and high waves from the typhoon, which resulted in water-logging in some sections of the road.
Furthermore, due to the influence of the typhoon, several areas in Dongguan City encountered strong winds and heavy rainfall, which led to road inundation and stranded some residents. In response, firefighters promptly launched rescue operations.
In the early hours of Saturday, the local rescue brigade received an urgent call, saying that several residents were trapped in a factory due to heavy rainfall.
Upon reaching the site, firefighters were faced with serious road water-logging, and multiple vehicles were submerged in water with depths reaching around 1.2 meters. After confirming the number and specific locations of the stranded people, the firefighters immediately used rubber boats to reach and assist them.
The firefighters transferred three stranded people into the rubber boats, and along the way, they spotted two more people in distress. Without hesitation, the firefighters waded through the flooded area to reach the trapped individuals. After providing them with life jackets, they were safely transported to a secure area.
Following that, the firefighters conducted a systematic search of the entire street, ensuring the evacuation of a total of 20 stranded people, and relocating them to safe places.
