Iran ready to help promote stability, security in Europe: Deputy FM

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Bagheri Kani (R) shakes hands with Serbian State Secretary Goran Aleksic in Tehran on August 6, 2023.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani says Tehran is ready to help promote stability and security in Europe.

In a Sunday meeting with Serbian State Secretary Goran Aleksic in Tehran, Bagheri Kani said Iran's policy vis-à-vis Europe is based on cooperation and mutual respect.

"Iran's policy towards this strategic region (the Balkans) is to cooperate with regional countries with the purpose of strengthening stability and security."

The senior Iranian diplomat put a premium on improving trade with the Balkan countries, not least Serbia. Lasting stability, he said, hinges on consolidating economic bonds.

The Serbian official, for his part, said his current "constructive visit" to Tehran would help bolster mutual relations in all fields.

Aleksic hailed Iran's support for Serbia's territorial integrity and said enhanced trade between the two countries is an inevitable necessity.

Heading a delegation, Aleksic is in Tehran for an official two-day visit. He met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Saturday.

During the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister described the current status of relations between Iran and Serbia as progressive and favorable, stressing that Tehran sees no obstacles to upgrading its ties with Belgrade.

Last month, Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi expressed the Islamic Republic’s support for peace and stability in the Balkans.
