Coup in Niger
Niger experienced a coup this week, when President Mohamed Bazoum was deposed by General Abdourahmane Tiani, the current junta leader.
The West has demanded that Tiani relinquish power and reinstate Bazoum to the presidency. The Junta though has stated that it is going nowhere as the security and stability of the country had reached the brink. Moreover, the West African Economic Block known as ECOWAS has warned of military intervention if the junta insists on taking over the country.
All this while anti-West sentiments are running high in the streets of Niamey leading to emergency evacuations of US and European diplomatic staff and civilians from the country.
