Iran to repair 5 GW of Syria’s power plants: Minister
Iran has agreed to Syria’s request for carrying out repairs on 5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity generation capacity in the Arab country hat has been damaged in its decade-long war with foreign-backed militants, according to Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian.
Mehrabian made the announcement on Tuesday in a meeting with Syria’s Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Mohammad Samer al-Khalil in Tehran.
“Rebuilding nearly 5 GW of power plants by Iranian companies and specialists in Syria was negotiated in today’s meeting,” said Mehrabian after the meeting with Khalil, adding that Iranian-made equipment will be used in the repair projects on Syria’s power plants.
He said a first phase of repair works on Syria’s power plants will cover 2 GW of capacity in electricity stations that burn liquid fuels like gas oil to generate power.
The minister said Iranian firms will then start repair works on 3 GW of Syria’s gas-fired power plants.
Syria’s Khalil, who is visiting Iran as part of a high-ranking political and trade delegation, said after meeting Mehrbian that his country is seeking to tap the technical capabilities of Iranian firms to rebuild its energy sector.
He said Syria’s current power generation capacity is at around 2 GW, down from some 9 GW it had before the war started in the Arab country in March 2011.
Iran has offered technical and financial support to Syria’s reconstruction efforts as the Arab country seeks to emerge from ruins of a devastating war with terrorists.
Iran’s energy engineering company MAPNA has executed various projects in Syria in recent years, including building and repairing power plants in the Mediterranean city of Latakia.
