Persian Gulf region can be secured without foreign interference: Iran FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian (R) and the United Arab Emirates' Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdallah bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says the security of the Persian Gulf region can be ensured without the interference of extra-regional countries.

During a phone call with his Emirati counterpart Sheikh Abdallah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Saturday evening, Amir-Abdollahian stated that Iran attaches great importance to the security of the Persian Gulf region.

“The countries of the region can ensure the security of this region without foreign interference,” he said.

Amir-Abdollahian also denounced the recent acts of desecration of the Holy Qur’an in Europe, reiterating Tehran’s call for an emergency meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states to address the issue.

The Iranian foreign minister said the insults to the holy book had hurt the feelings of all Muslims across the world, stressing the need to confront those responsible for the blasphemy.

Over the past month, the holy Muslim book has been subject to acts of desecration by extremist elements in three separate incidents in Sweden and Denmark, which were perpetrated under the aegis of the respected governments.

The sacrilegious moves have drawn the ire of the whole Muslim community, prompting the summon or expulsion of Swedish and Danish envoys from several Muslim-majority countries.

During the phone call, Amir-Abdollahian also pointed to his recent trip to the UAE and his “very good and constructive” meetings with the country’s high-ranking authorities, saying the necessary arrangements had to be made to implement the agreements reached.

Bin Zayed, for his part, strongly condemned the sacrilege of divine books, religions and religious beliefs, and welcomed the Iranian foreign minister’s proposal for a ministerial meeting of the OIC member states.

The Emirati foreign minister also described Amir-Abdollahian’s recent trip to the UAE as “very important” and called for the enhancement of cooperation between Abu Dhabi and Tehran in all fields.
