Iranian official calls for boycott on Swedish, Danish products

Iranian students stage a rally in front of the Swedish embassy to protest the desecration of the holy Quran in Sweden, on July 21, 2023 in Tehran.

A senior Iranian official says Muslim countries should move to boycott products manufactured or sold by Sweden and Denmark after the two Nordic countries allowed desecration of the holy Quran on their soil.

Mohsen Rezaei, who serves as secretary of a top advisory economic body for the Iranian government, said on Saturday that boycotting Swedish and Danish products should be included in the coordinated measures being adopted by Islamic governments to condemn the acts of insults against the holy Quran in the Sweden and Denmark.

“What is happening in some European countries, including in Sweden and Denmark, against Islamic sanctities and the Quran, is barbarism rather than freedom,” said Rezaei in a post on social media.

“To prevent a repetition of such heinous and inhumane acts, the Muslim countries have a duty to boycott their commodities, expel their ambassadors and follow up on the prosecution of the abusive people and their backers,” he said.

Anger has grown across the Islamic countries since earlier this week when a second act of insult against the holy Quran happened in Sweden with apparent consent from political and police authorities in the country.

Another case of Quran desecration happened in Denmark on Friday when a man set fire to a copy of the holy Quran on a square across from the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen.

That came weeks after a man set ablaze a copy of the Quran during an event in front of the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm, Sweden.

Governments in Muslim countries have been coordinating their efforts to show a decisive response to the cases of sacrilege against Islamic sanctities in European countries.

Iran has declared it will not accept Sweden’s new ambassador and will avoid sending a new envoy to the European country in protest against the recent acts of insult against the holy Quran.
