Iran urges global action against Israel’s inhuman practices

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has condemned the Israeli military’s two-day aggression in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, calling on the international community to take immediate action to end the regime’s new wave of systematic violence against Palestinians.

Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a Thursday meeting with a Palestinian delegation led by Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki on the sides of a ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the Azerbaijani capital city of Baku.

The top Iranian diplomat underscored the need for immediate and effective measures from the international community, especially the United Nations, to deal with the inhumane practices of the Israeli regime.

Israel launched the military aggression against Jenin in the early hours of Monday morning, with more than 1,000 troops to purportedly damage the resistance “infrastructure” in the city and the refugee camp that it hosts.

At least 12 Palestinians and one Israeli trooper were killed in the confrontation, which marked Palestinian resistance groups putting up a strong fight against the invading troops and forcing them to retreat after less than two days.

Israeli troops finally pulled back from Jenin on Tuesday evening, following a 44-hour-long incursion.

The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry pointed to the trail of destruction carried out by Israeli forces in Jenin, demanding the formation of a fact-finding mission to probe the Israeli atrocities. 

Nasser Kan’ani also questioned whether the United States and certain European countries would consent to a fact-finding team on the deadly Jenin attacks.

“Twelve martyrs, 140 wounded, complete destruction of water and electricity networks, complete destruction of 300 houses and damage to some 500 others, and destruction of streets and shops are the upshot of the Zionist army's insane campaign in the refugee camp of Jenin city.”

“Will (the United States of) America and Europe demand the formation of a fact-finding committee from the [UN] Human Rights Council?” Kan’ani asked.

Palestinian envoy urges UN to hold Israel accountable for ‘barbaric’ raid on Jenin

Palestine’s ambassador to the UN has called on the world body to hold Israel accountable for its “barbaric” onslaught on Jenin and its refugee camp.

According to Imene Trabelsi from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the majority of the Jenin camp’s residents have been “massively distressed” by the Israeli aggression. 

“It is important to highlight that the population were already victim of the last six turbulent months due to several peaks of violence that occurred during the last six months, which makes the humanitarian situation already fragile,” Trabelsi said.

The residents do not have access to electricity and clean, drinkable water due to the damage caused by the Israeli forces to the main water pipelines and electricity grid. Armed actors have the legal obligation to take every possible measure in order to protect the safety of civilians, their property, and the vital infrastructure, she said.

“What we are seeing today is a very alarming humanitarian situation that requires further support from the humanitarian actors.”

“The main responsibility falls under what the authorities must be delivering. Israeli authorities do have the obligation during such operations to make sure that the population at all times do still have access to water, electricity, health, food and shelter,” the ICRC official said.
