The British counter-terrorism police have detained Press TV contributor Kit Klarenberg and interrogated him over his political reporting and alleged ties with Russia.

Klarenberg, who is known for his high-profile reports on British and US intelligence intrigues, often using leaked or unclassified documents, was detained on May 17 upon arrival in the UK from Serbia, where he currently resides.

According to the US-based investigative journalism website Grayzone, he was approached by six plain-clothes counter-terror officers immediately after his plane touched down at London’s Luton airport earlier this month.

Grayzone reports that the journalist was then escorted to a room where police confiscated all his electronic devices, bank cards, camera memory cards and sims, took his fingerprints and DNA, took photographs and subjected him to a five-hour long interrogation, and threatened arrest if he refused to cooperate.

In the interrogation room, Klarenberg was grilled on a number of issues, including whether he had any foreign property, why he chose to live in Serbia and how much he paid for rent.

He was also questioned about his journalistic work and which outlets he wrote for.

The counter-terrorism officers then pressed the journalist on his alleged ties to Russia.

According to the outlet, police also probed Klarenberg on his political affiliations and beliefs, his political activism, his opinion of the Russian government, and the situation in Ukraine.

After the officers appeared to have run out of questions, Klarenberg said he was let go but told that he remained under investigation.

Klarenberg has been a regular contributor to Press TV, with one of his major exposes revealing how Britain used ambulances during the conflict in Syria to aid foreign-backed terrorists.

Among Klarenberg’s notable contributions are his pieces on the role of Western governments in the 2022 foreign-backed riots in Iran.

Protests erupted in September last year over the death of a young Iranian woman Mahsa Amini first in her native province of Kordestan and later in several cities, including the capital.

The foreign-backed violent riots claimed dozens of lives from both security forces and innocent people as the Western media and Persian-language news networks continued to induce riots in Iran.
