Iran launches over $110 mln worth of telecom projects

President Raeisi inaugurates over $110 million worth of telecoms projects in Iran.

Iran has launched more than $110 million worth of telecom projects as the country moves ahead with plans to boost its communication infrastructure.

President Ebrahim Raeisi on Wednesday inaugurated six major projects that were key to Iran’s telecoms infrastructure in a ceremony that marked the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

The projects included providing FTTx services, which offer broadband via optic fiber, to three million households and businesses in Iran.

The project is part of a larger drive to make FTTx available to 20 million customers in Iran by 2025 when Raeisi's current term in office expires.

Other projects included providing optic fiber access from Iran’s mainland to three remote islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa in the Persian Gulf, as well as launching fiber connection between islands of Kish and Hendurabi in the same region.

Iran’s telecoms minister Issa Zarepour said in the inauguration ceremony that some 4,000 new villages across Iran had been connected to the country’s National Information Network, a platform that offers high-speed internet and intranet services.

He said the government had spent  some 42 trillion rials ($84 million) on the project over the past 20 months.
