Russia says German arms supplies to Ukraine pushing Berlin deeper into war

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov

Russia has warned that Germany is increasingly getting involved in the Ukraine war due to arms supplies Berlin has offered to Kiev.

The Kremlin on Tuesday also warned that the German government had no way of ensuring that German-supplied weapons would not be used against Russian territory.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that such supplied weapons by Berlin were already being used in the Donbas region.

The Donbas industrial region (composed of Donetsk and Luhansk) along with Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia were added by Moscow to the Russian Federation following referendums in the said regions in September 2022.

Ukraine and its Western allies, including Germany, have dismissed the move as illegal, denouncing it as Russia's imperial land grab. However, much of the territory in the Russian-annexed regions still remains in Ukrainian hands.

A day earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Berlin had insisted, like other NATO member states, that the weapons it is supplying to Ukraine must not be used against Russian territory.

Nevertheless, Peskov rejected Berlin's claim, saying, "First, Germany doesn't have a way to check. Second, the weapons supplied by Germany to the Kiev regime are already firing at Russian territory, because the Donbas is a Russian region."

He also warned that Germany's "direct and indirect involvement" in the conflict was increasing, adding, "The German chancellor should take that as his starting point."

Russia launched a full-scale war against neighboring Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Since then, the United States and the European Union have supplied Ukraine with tens of billions of dollars worth of weapons, including rocket systems, drones, armored vehicles, tanks, and communication systems despite Russia's repeated warnings that the Western military assistance will only prolong the war.

Germany, along with the US, has been one of the biggest suppliers of weapons for Ukraine.
