Nowruz in Afghanistan: A celebration of hope, resilience

Afghanistan has been celebrating Nowruz, the Persian New Year for centuries. It is usually a colorful and joyous festival, welcoming spring and a new life. But the celebration has been dampened since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, and the subsequent economic hardships. Nowruz is no longer an official holiday in Afghanistan. However, the Taliban authorities say they won’t prevent people from celebrating the festival.
Despite challenges, many Afghans are determined to keep their spirits high and enjoy the Nowruz festivities. They dress up in new clothes and visit their relatives and friends. Afghan families also prepare special dishes such as Haft Seen, Samanak, and Fish. Many others plant trees and flowers to signify growth and prosperity. All in all, Afghans hope for a better year ahead, one that brings peace and joy to their war-torn country.
Afghan people say they still find joy and meaning in their traditions and culture. For them, Nowruz is more than just a festival. It is a way of life that celebrates their heritage and resilience.
