Malnutrition taking heavy toll on Afghan children

I am visiting a children's hospital in Kabul, which is said to be overwhelmed with malnourished kids. Every few hours, a sick child is brought into the malnourishment ward, while doctors and nurses are racing against time to save the youngest victims of Afghanistan's crises.

The World Health Organization says in 2023, around 17,000 Afghan babies and mothers are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition, while over 2.3 million children may suffer from moderate acute malnutrition. The UN body adds that an estimated 28.3 million people, comprising two-thirds of Afghanistan’s population, need urgent relief assistance.

Concerns are on the rise among Afghans over their isolation from the international community and major cuts in global aid following the Taliban’s takeover and US withdrawal from their country.

Afghanistan has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world. Afghans are calling on the global community not to leave them alone amid poverty and hunger.
