Tehran congress: Raeisi lauds Ayatollah Mesbah as ‘renowned jurisprudent’

The Iranian capital of Tehran has hosted an international congress in honor of late renowned scholar Ayatollah Mohammad-Taghi Mesbah Yazdi, with President Ebrahim Raeisi commending the cleric as a prominent figure and well-known jurisprudent.

The international ceremony, held on the second anniversary of the cleric’s death and under the title of ‘Master of Thought’, was attended by various prominent professors, academicians and intellectuals from across the world on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, Raeisi lauded Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi as an “eminent figure” and “renowned jurisprudent,” saying that the late intellectual was a “leading authority” both in the field of Islamic laws and ethics.

“The speech of such a person reminds us of God and his actions are also manifestations of jurisprudence,” the Iranian president told the international congress.

Raeisi stressed that Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi was one of those fighting the US-backed Pahlavi regime in Iran back in 1970s, and a staunch supporter of the Islamic Republic after the 1979 Revolution in the country.

The Iranian chief executive also said the prominent cleric confronted “deviant” ideologies and seditionists who aimed to bring chaos to the region, and was one of the role models in the field of resistance along with the late anti-terror commander General Qassem Soleimani.

Raeisi noted that Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi enjoyed an “outstanding” sense of time, direction and responsibility in recognizing seditions and mobilizing forces against anti-Iran plots.

Mesbah Yazdi, a philosopher and political theorist, died on January 1, 2021 at the age of 85 due to gastrointestinal disease.

Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi spent most of his life teaching and conducting research on Islamic thoughts. “Teaching Philosophy,” “Ethics in the Qur'an” and “Islam’s Political Theory” are among his famous works.

The senior clergyman was a student of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, and accompanied him in the fight against oppression, corruption, and arrogance during the US-backed Pahlavi dynasty.

The ayatollah was a member of the Assembly of Experts and the Society of the Seminary Teachers of Qom. He also founded the Baqir-ul-Uloom Institute and then the Imam Khomeini Education and Research Institute in the city of Qom, which he headed for the rest of his life.

He was one of the pillars in the field of explaining and promoting the transcendent Islamic wisdom in the contemporary era and was a great master in mysticism and practical ethics, using his knowledge to defend the Islamic revolution and Islamic thoughts.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei offered his condolences on the passing of the senior Iranian cleric last year and in his message the Leader praised the late cleric as “a prominent thinker, a competent manager, and an outspoken advocate of the truth with fortitude on the path of righteousness.”
