An American political analyst and activist says the long knives are out for former Republican President Donald Trump, following an unsatisfactory performance of several candidates he supported in the recent midterm elections.

Myles Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, said in an interview with Press TV on Thursday that Trump is old news and will become less and less relevant in the media.

Trump announced on Tuesday night that he will seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.

“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump told a crowd gathered at Mar-a-Lago, his waterfront estate in Florida, where his campaign will be headquartered.

“We are a nation in decline. We are a failing nation for millions of Americans,” Trump said, adding, "I will ensure that Joe Biden does not receive four more years."

This is while a majority of American voters in a new poll say Trump should definitely not run for the White House again, following an unsatisfactory performance of several candidates he supported in the recent midterm elections.

The Politico-Morning Consult poll, released on Tuesday, showed that 53 percent of registered voters believe Trump definitely should not run, while 12 percent said he probably shouldn’t, The Hill reported.

However, about 20 percent of respondents said the former president should definitely run, while only 12 percent said he probably should.

Hoenig said, “Most commentary by the pundit class about Trump’s announcement is pretty close to accurate. It was a lackluster performance; He rambled (as always); He attacked future GOP icons; He announced thinking it would shield him from criminal investigations; He needs to stay relevant and in the limelight; etc.”

“The one thing Trump can count on is that his public exposure is far more likely to be of indictments and money troubles, not political. With his previous media and political sycophants distancing themselves from him, the only news from now on will be bad news. It’s said that any exposure is good, even if it’s negative coverage, but in his case it will only snowball on him to a point of possibly breaking him emotionally. His niece, Dr. Mary Trump, pretty much predicts a meltdown coming soon,” the analyst added.

“In many ways, Trump is old news and will become less and less relevant in the media, except to cover his criminal trials,” he stated.

“He will no longer be a person of stature (for good or bad) but one of derision.  He created an enormous mess for himself and the party that adopted him. (He was originally a Democrat.) People are calling the Republican Party a ‘party in ruin’ and those who only crave power (that is, all elected representatives and senators) will have their swords out for him,” he said.

“We are seeing the bloodless equivalent of Hitler’s Night of the Long Knives in reverse, or a thousand Brutuses. And who would be the Marc Anthony who’ll pick up the Trump mantle, without Trump? Far too early to make predictions. In politics, a month is an eternity. And as Lenin said, ‘There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.’ Where Trump falls in that is the big question,” he concluded.

Following the midterm elections on November 8, the Republican Party failed to win control of the Senate and underperformed in races across the country. It appears the Democrats would control the Senate, and Republicans would win the House of Representatives.

Trump has received criticism from members of the Republican Party for the party’s performance in some of the most high-profile midterm races.

GOP Senator Bill Cassidy has put the blame of midterm election losses on Republican candidates aligned with Trump, saying those candidates “underperformed” on Election Day.

“He blew the Midterms, and everyone despises him and his otherwise lovely wife, Coco Chow!” Trump wrote.
