Cost-of-living worries mount in France as biting cold sets in

At least 92 percent of French people are concerned about the level of rising inflation in France, a survey carried out by the Odoxa group has found.

The results of the survey published in French media showed energy, food and inflation are among the main worries of the French.

Some 75 percent of respondents believe the country’s economic difficulties will be more severe in 2023, said BFM Business news channel. Some 78 percent said they are “less confident,” compared to 22 percent who are “more confident,” it said.

Over a third of respondents believe inflation is above 15 percent, indicating their distrust of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) which has recorded inflation of 12.5 percent.

Faced with the cost-of-living crisis, the French are turning to their savings. According to the survey, 46 percent of the citizens have already dipped into their savings or taken out one or more loans for their daily bread, a figure that has gone 10 percentage points higher since June.

Meanwhile, with the biting cold setting in, authorities in Paris - known as the city of lights - have ordered the lights to be turned off after finishing work to save energy.

The steeply rising inflation has caused specially food and energy prices to soar into untouched horizons.
