Woodward: Trump ‘dangerous’ and ‘a threat to democracy’

Bob Woodward, one of America’s most famous journalists, said that he considers former US President Donald Trump “dangerous” and a threat to both democracy and the presidency.

Woodward is the author of a new audiobook, titled “The Trump Tapes: Bob Woodward’s Twenty Interviews with President Donald Trump,” which includes the full audio of his 20 one-on-one interviews with Trump.

“Trump was the wrong man for the job,” Woodward said during an interview with CBS on Sunday. “I realize now, two years later, all of the Jan. 6 insurrection, leads me to the conclusion that he’s not just the wrong man for the job, but he’s dangerous, and he is a threat to democracy, and he’s a threat to the presidency because he doesn’t understand the core obligations that come with that office.”

Trump continues to pose a threat to US democracy Woodward wrote in an op-ed for The Washington Post published Sunday.

“‘The Trump Tapes’ leaves no doubt that after four years in the presidency, Trump has learned where the levers of power are, and full control means installing absolute loyalists in key Cabinet and White House posts” he wrote.

“The record now shows that Trump has led — and continues to lead — a seditious conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, which in effect is an effort to destroy democracy,” he added.

“Trump reminds how easy it is to break things you do not understand — democracy and the presidency,” he wrote.

On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters occupied the US Capitol while lawmakers were in the process of reviewing the certification of state electors which indicated Biden's victory. Some Trump supporters had hoped that this process could have resulted in some of the electors being disqualified, thus overturning the outcome of the presidential election.

It is claimed by some that the demonstrators were infiltrated and incited by provocateurs from US intelligence agencies, who orchestrated the “false flag operation” in order to get rid of Trump.

Some among the crowd clashed with police, and some made threats to beat up a number of Democratic lawmakers. Some also inflicted damage on parts of the Capitol building.

“January 6 was the conclusion of the theft of the election, but it was stolen from Trump, not by him,” said Don DeBar, a New-York based journalist.

“The riot and crashing of the Capitol negated the possibility of a series of challenges allowed under the Constitution and the Rules of the Joint Session which would have resulted in interruptions of the session to separate hearings in each house to examine the details of the election challenges in each of the key states,” he told Press TV.

“The breach occurred during the first of what would have been six different trials of fact that could have taken place, in public and on television. Instead, the breach and its PR management across the US media, coordinated with the leadership of both parties, made the very idea that there was an election theft seem treasonous,  instead making it a weapon to keep Trump from being re-elected ever again, as we're now seeing,” he noted.

Woodward’s new book is slated for release on Oct. 25.

Trump has repeatedly hinted at a potential 2024 run, though he hasn’t fully yet committed himself to another campaign and some Republicans remain skeptical that he will actually move forward with a comeback bid.

He has been casting doubt on the outcome of his loss by insisting it was the result of fraud. He has said that the 2020 presidential election was “the greatest Election Hoax in history.”

Trump and his allies had raised concerns that widespread fraud marred the election and that it was rigged by the Washington establishment in favor of Biden, who was certified as the winner in Congress on January 6, 2021.

Most Republicans also believe that the election was stolen from Trump, and the Republican is the legitimate president of the United States.
