Iran will respond to US move to ease internet-related sanctions: Report

Iran warns against any US move to facilitate uncontrolled access to the internet in the country.

Iran will react strongly to a recent move by the United States to facilitate uncontrolled access to the internet in the country, according to a report by a website close to the country’s Supreme National Security Council.

The Sunday report by the Nournews referred to reports suggesting that the US Treasury Department had eased its restrictions governing the supply of internet software and hardware to the people in Iran at a time the country is facing riots and sabotage in many towns and cities.

“The US committing to such a level of interference in Iran’s domestic affairs is an issue that cannot be ignored and our country will definitely make a necessary response,” read part of the report.

The report comes days after authorities in Washington said they would be ready to issue waivers from Iran sanctions, if necessary, for US-based company Space X to provide its Starlink satellite broadband service in the country.

Iran imposed restrictions on internet access earlier this week after authorities announced that rioters had used online services to coordinate sabotage activities during protests that followed the death of a young woman in police custody.

However, speaking to reporters this week, Iran’s telecoms minister Issa Zarepour ruled out the possibility for an immediate rollout of Starlink internet in Iran.

Zarepour also warned against legal consequences for Space X if it goes ahead with its plan on Iran, an issue that was also highlighted in Nournews’ Sunday report.

The report said the US and other countries that have supported the recent riots in Iran should take a lesson from Iran’s previous responses as it suggested that Iran may use “its capabilities in various fields” to counter the vicious acts of the enemies.
