Imran Khan offers apology in contempt case

Hundreds of police were deployed at Islamabad High Court on Thursday ahead of the likely indictment of Pakistan’s former prime minister. Imran Khan is facing contempt of court charges for his public speech last month that was deemed as derogatory against a lady judge.

The former prime minister had criticized the judge after one of his close aides was denied bail despite alleged police torture.

Suspense and speculations surrounded Khan’s court proceedings over whether he would offer an apology or not. But at the outset of the proceedings, Khan came to the rostrum and offered an apology. After the announcement, his indictment was postponed by the high court.

Legal experts believe that Khan has potentially avoided a conviction and disqualification by offering this apology. Khan has been given reprieve just days before he is set to launch a fresh anti-government movement.

The former prime minister was ousted from power in a vote of no confidence in April. Khan has repeatedly accused the US of plotting his dismissal. Since then, he has been addressing large public gatherings to push for early elections. The coalition government, however, is adamant to complete the term and hence the political standoff.
