Iran aims big with large presence in Russian auto show
Dozens of companies from Iran’s automotive sector have participated in Russia’s main car show, a sign the country is serious about its plans to capture a major share of the Russian car market.
The official IRNA news agency said in a Monday report that Iran has the largest presence at the MIMS Automobility Moscow 2022, an event being held from August 22 to 25.
The report said some 50 Iranian companies were showcasing their parts and equipment in an area of 1,700 square meters in Moscow’s Expo Center.
It said the presence was a first of its kind considering the number of companies represented in the auto show and the area dedicated to them.
Iran’s minister of industries Reza Fatemi Amin also traveled to Moscow on top of a senior delegation to attend the opening ceremony of the Russian car exhibition.
Fatemi Amin told the IRNA that the show could mark a turning point in automotive industry cooperation between Iran and Russia as the two countries seek to offset the impacts of foreign sanctions on their economies.
That comes as earlier reports had suggested that Iran’s largest carmaker the IKCO and its rival Saipa were seeking to expand their markets in Russia.
The two companies have plans to engage in partnerships with Russian automakers, including a project between Saipa and Russia’s AvtoVaz to manufacture a Renault model that was discontinued in Iran in 2018 after the French company left Iran under American pressure.
Industry experts believe that the Russian market could also offer some good opportunities for Iranian car parts manufacturers.
