Prayers, storytelling and tearful rhythmic chanting are all expected when Shia Muslims begin their annual Muharram commemorations across the globe.

Shia Muslims mourn the first 10 days of the Islamic month of Muharram, in remembrance of the martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hossein, who was unjustly slain by an oppressive tyrant nearly 1,400 years ago.

The remembrance of Imam Hussein’s legacy isn't only witnessed in the East. But a growing community of Shia Muslim converts in the West is also taking wisdom from Imam Hossein's martyrdom story.

We spoke to one convert who explained why he felt Shia Islam was the ideal faith for him. Despite the growth, some community leaders feel more work needs to be done to support new converts.

Shia Muslims currently make up about 15% of the estimated three million Muslims in Britain, with well over 100 mosques across the nation, ensuring Imam Hossein's memory is being shared like never before.
