Ayatollah Khamenei endorses Iran’s cap on rent increases
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has endorsed a government decision to impose a cap on rent increases, saying renewed rent contracts will not be against religious laws even if landlords are not satisfied with the amount of rent increase.
A report published by the official IRNA news agency on Wednesday showed that Ayatollah Khamenei’s endorsement had come in response to an ‘istifta’, or a religious inquiry, about the cap on rent increases.
The inquiry asked the Leader whether the cap would not violate the rights of landlords and whether their dissatisfaction with the amount of the rent would not have a negative impact on the religious duties performed by the tenants during their stay at the property.
Ayatollah Khemenei replied to the istifta by saying that the stay will be religiously permissible although he recommended the tenants to reach a conciliatory agreement with the landlords if possible.
In a meeting earlier this month, heads of the three branches of the Iranian government ordered a 25% cap on rent increases for contracts that are renewed in the calendar year to late March.
The decision, a first of its kind in Iran, is aimed at protecting renters against skyrocketing rent hikes caused by high inflation rates in the country.
Iran’s housing ministry has announced it will adopt strict measures to enforce the rent controls while insisting that the government decision will be binding on all courts in Iran.
