Monsoon floods submerge parts of Bangladesh
Floodwaters inundated more of Bangladesh on Tuesday, as residents grappled with various damages and authorities struggled to reach more than 9.5 million people stranded with little food and drinking water after days of intense rain.
Local television showed submerged buildings and people walking through thigh-deep muddy waters or paddling around their village in canoes.
The monsoon brings heavy rains to South Asia between June and October, often triggering floods, especially in low-lying areas like Bangladesh, where rivers swollen with waters pouring out of the Himalayas often burst their banks.
The floods in the Sylhet region are the most severe in more than a century and the U.N. children's fund said 90% of its health facilities have been inundated, and cases of waterborne diseases are increasing.
