Ukrainian civilians caught in the middle of the fighting

Humanitarian aid being loaded into a lorry; I am heading with pro Russian volunteers to a village near the frontline, which is constantly under shelling, in order to deliver much needed supplies. Despite the destruction all around, people incredibly still live here.

We stop off next to the final checkpoint. Beyond is no man’s land, the grey zone between the opposing armies.

Unexpectedly, in this wasteland, a bus pulls up. The man tells me his house was destroyed yesterday. He shows me his wounds. I ask him why he’s come back. To get some documents and feed his cat he says.

A crowd has gathered at the drop off point hungry for the humanitarian aid.
This girl broke her arm while running away from incoming artillery. I ask her younger sister if she’s scared here. She shakes her head. She’s used to it, she says.

It’s noticeable that most people here are women and children. The men have joined the armies.

Those who remain don’t leave because it’s their home and they have nowhere else to go. They tell me this used to be a pleasant place to live. The same can be said of many other parts of Ukraine. The longer this war goes on, the more of this pleasant land will be destroyed.
