Gazans express solidarity with Palestinian prisoners languishing in Israeli prisons

Families of Palestinian prisoners and rights activists have held a sit-in protest inside the office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza.

They protested Israel’s inhumane treatment of some five thousand political prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Their solidarity action comes as some 450 administrative detainees have been refusing to show up for their military court hearings for more than six months.

These detainees are held in Israeli jails without charge or trial for a long time. Their only recourse to call attention to their plight has been hunger strikes.

Among them, Khalil Awawdeh has been refusing food for more than three months and Raed Rayyan has adopted the same passive resistance approach since more than two months ago.

Palestinian prisoners are held in 24 Israeli prisons and detention centers where rights groups say they are denied their basic human rights.

Prisoners’ advocacy groups also condemned Israel’s inhumane treatment of Palestinian prisoners especially those suffering from chronic medical conditions.

Securing the release of prisoners is a highly emotive issue for Palestinians who regard them as prisoners of war and as symbols of resistance against the Israeli occupation.

Rights groups are calling on the international community to hold the Israeli regime accountable for its grave violations against Palestinian prisoners.
