Russia accuses US of direct involvement in Ukraine war
Russia has accused the United States of coordinating military operations in Ukraine, saying the move amounts to Washington’s direct involvement in military action against Moscow.
Vyacheslav Volodin, who as the speaker of the lower house of the Russian parliament often voices the Kremlin’s views, made the remarks in a post on his Telegram channel on Saturday.
“Washington is essentially coordinating and developing military operations, thereby directly participating in military actions against our country,” the Duma chairman said.
He said foreign advisers had been working in Ukraine since what he called the "coup d'etat," in an apparent reference to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s democratic election in 2019.
The United States and its Western allies have stepped up military support for Ukraine, sending a wide array of defensive weapons meant to hold off Russia's advance.
The New York Times, citing US officials, reported on Wednesday that Washington has provided intelligence about Russian units that has helped Ukrainian forces kill many of the Russian generals in the war.
Since Russia began its special operation in Ukraine in late February, the US intelligence agencies have used a variety of sources, including classified and commercial satellites, to trace Russian troop movements.
In the meantime, the United States has provided training to Ukrainian forces at multiple locations in Europe.
On Wednesday, defense officials said the US is currently expanding its weapons training, with hundreds now being trained on artillery systems, drones and radars.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the operation in Ukraine on February 24. The conflict has provoked a unanimous response from Western countries, which have imposed a long list of sanctions on Moscow. Russia says it will halt the operation instantly if Kiev meets Moscow’s list of demands, including never applying to join NATO.
Russia has already urged Western capitals to stop pumping weapons into Ukraine. It has also warned of a quick-fire military response to any country that intervenes in Moscow’s military offensive against Ukraine.
