Two people are dead and ten others were wounded in a shooting at a nightclub in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in what police believe was a targeted attack.

Officers on routine patrol downtown at the time of the incident on Sunday arrived at the scene and found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds.

An unknown number of shooters fired between one and two dozen shots in the Taboo Nightclub and Lounge, police said.

The shooting left a man and a woman killed, according to a Cedar Rapids Police Department (CRPD) statement. Ten others were taken to nearby medical facilities with injuries ranging from life-threatening to minor.

As many as 150 people were inside the club when the incident occurred, added the statement.

Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman told reporters that the suspected shooter, or shooters, may have escaped the scene with the rush of patrons.

Jerman said the shooting appears to be a targeted attack. "I am livid and angry at the continued disregard and lack of respect for human life."

In another shooting, one person was killed and five others were wounded in Indianapolis after an apparent fight at a birthday party devolved into a shooting on Sunday.

"Preliminarily, detectives believe a birthday party was taking place at the event hall when a fight occurred and shots were fired," the police department said in a statement.

"Shots were fired both inside and outside the building. There are no individuals detained reference this incident."

The shootings follow a number of mass shootings in the US in the past few weeks, including one in Sacramento, Calif., that left six people dead and 12 others injured.

Mass shootings are rife in the United States, where firearms are used in nearly 40,000 deaths a year, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive website.

Lax gun laws and the right to bear arms have repeatedly thwarted attempts to clamp down on the number of weapons in circulation.

US President Joe Biden says gun violence has turned into an "epidemic" in the country.
