Washington slams North Korea while showcasing weapons as Seoul launches rocket

North Korea Tuesday tested a submarine launched ballistic missile. The US wasted little time condemning the launch.

Meanwhile, South Korea Thursday launched a homegrown rocket designed to place satellites in orbit.

This week, Seoul airport hosted an air defense exhibition with the US, South Korea, and other weapons producers showing off their arms to international buyers. A webinar of activists online Thursday decried an industry rife with corruption.

South Korea’s launch and international weapons trade are activities banned for North Korea under controversial United Nations Security Council sanctions many want eased.

The criticism of North Korea from Washington and its allies exemplifies the double standards being applied to Pyongyang. The question is whether South Korea and its President Moon Jae-in can bring the US and North Korea together to discuss denuclearization and sanctions relief and perhaps even an official declaration to end the 1950-53 Korean War.
