Iran to introduce Euro 5 emission standard on gasoline usage

The Iranian government is to announce Euro 5 standard for exhaust emissions.

The Iranian government is to announce a new set of emission standards for gasoline usage in vehicles as it seeks to reduce pollution in large cities.

Head of the Institute of Standards & Industrial Research of Iran said on Wednesday that the government body will introduce Euro 5 standard to control emissions of light passenger and commercial vehicles.

Gholamreza Shariati said the new standards had been compiled and the government will soon announce them as part of a new directive issued to various departments.

Under on the new standards, refineries in Iran will have to supply higher-quality gasoline to motorists in large cities while vehicle manufacturers are supposed to redesign the fuel system in their products to comply with the new rules.

Iran has already implemented the Euro 4 standard for exhaust emissions of all vehicles traveling in the country.

Increasing gasoline quality standards has enabled Iranian refiners to market their products in various countries in Asia and elsewhere.

It has also led to a significant reduction in pollution in large cities like the capital Tehran.

Shariati said that the Euro 4 emission standards have been fully complied with in large cities over the past years although he admitted that there have been issues with the quality of gasoline supplied to gas stations in some smaller cities.

He said Iran’s Oil Ministry has been working to improve the quality of diesel produced by domestic refineries to make it more consistent with latest emissions standards.

The official said the full enforcement of Euro 5 standards in Iran will depend on decisions in the Oil Ministry which controls a majority of state refiners in the country.
