Hamas urges Palestinians in West Bank for more nighttime protests against Israeli occupation

The leader of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has called on all Palestinians in the occupied West Bank to hold more nighttime protest rallies against the Israeli occupation.

The Gaza-based resistance movement’s Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh made the call on Sunday in a statement marking 100 days since the start of the Beita town protests against the Israeli settler outpost on Mount Sobeih.

Since May, the town has seen intensified clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians protesting against Eviatar settlement outpost that has been established on the mountain by Israeli settlers under the protection of troops.

Haniyeh urged all Palestinian inhabitants of the West Bank to rise up and rally around their compatriots in Beita and turn all the arenas of popular confrontation with the Israeli forces into nighttime protests similar to the daily rallies occurring in the town, the Palestinian Information Center reported.

“The engagement of the Beita villagers in Nablus in their uprising for 100 days reflects a national awareness about the need to confront the occupation and its settlement projects and reflects the Palestinian people’s ability to practice and develop their right to popular resistance,” the Hamas chief said.

Haniyeh particularly praised the inhabitants of Beita for defending the land and making sacrifices for the national rights on behalf of the entire Palestinian people.

The Israeli authorities have now decided to turn Eviatar into a military base. However, the Beita residents have rejected the decision and pledged to continue their protests until the full removal of the outpost.

More than 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds.

All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. The UN Security Council has condemned Israel’s settlement activities in the occupied territories in several resolutions.

Palestinians want the West Bank as part of a future independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital.
