Afghanistan is a sovereign nation and history has proved once again that any intervention by a foreign power in the country is doomed to failure, says China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

“With the withdrawal of the United States and NATO from Afghanistan, the Afghan people have learned from their painful experience and have a new opportunity to take the destiny of their country and nation into their own hands,” the Chinese diplomat said on Tuesday.

He also called for both the Taliban and the government to resume dialogue as soon as possible.

The Taliban militant group should realize the responsibilities it bears for the nation, make a clean break with all terrorist forces and return to the mainstream of Afghan politics, Wang said.

For a long time, the Afghan government has done a lot of work to maintain national unity, social stability and improve the people's livelihood, which should be fairly evaluated, the minister added.

China and some other countries have accused Washington of conducting a hasty and chaotic withdrawal after two decades of occupation.

Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy for Afghanistan on Wednesday warned the Taliban that any attempt to undermine security in the region would lead to grave consequences for the militant group.

Zamir Kabulov told Russia’s Sputnik that Moscow was “closely monitoring the situation” as the Taliban overran areas in Afghanistan, bordering five countries — Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, China, and Pakistan.

US forces are leaving Afghanistan after two decades of war and occupation. The US general leading the war in Afghanistan, Austin Miller, recently relinquished command at a ceremony in the capital Kabul, and quietly left the country.

Washington has spent trillions of dollars for the war on Afghanistan, which has left hundreds of thousands of people dead.
