Gazan fishermen protest Israeli restrictions on fishing zones

Scores of Palestinian fishermen staged a protest against the ongoing Israeli violations against them in the sea of Gaza.

The Israeli siege imposed on the fishing area for 15 years has deteriorated the lives of Gazan fishermen who are dependent on the fishing industry, and has badly affected Gaza's economy.

The Fishermen Syndicate in Gaza organized the protest in Gaza's port. There was also a press conference aimed at highlighting the Israeli abuse against fishermen, namely opening fire at them, arresting them, and drowning fishing boats.

During the latest Israeli offensive on Gaza, Israel closed the sea completely. Since the end of the onslaught on 21 May, Israel has opened the sea for fishermen only for six miles which is not enough for fishermen to get enough fish to help them make money or even provide enough fish for consumers.

Under the Oslo Agreement, the fishing range was 20 miles. However, over the years, the Israeli military gradually reduced this range, severely damaging the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening due to the Israeli blockade, which is taking its toll on the lives of 2 million Palestinians. Fishermen here in Gaza are calling on the international community to pressure Israel into ending the restrictions that threaten their daily lives and make it hard to maintain a source of income.
