Switzerland have defeated France 5-4 on penalties in the last 16 of the Euro 2020, following a thrilling 3-all draw in Bucharest to set up a quarter-finals meeting with Spain.
Switzerland took a shock lead in the 15th minute when Haris Sefe-Rovic rose high to nod home the opener.
Hugo Lloris saved a penalty from Ricardo Rodriguez to boost France’s confidence, before Karim Benzema scored twice in the span of two minutes to put France ahead, while Paul Pogba made it 3-1 with a beautiful curling effort.
Sefe-Rovic cut the deficit with another header in the 81st minute and Mario Gavranovic scored a last-gasp equalizer to send the game into extra time.
But with no goals in the allotted 30 minutes, the fate of the game had to be decided in a penalty shootout.
Switzerland converted all five of their penalties before Yann Sommer saved Kylian Mbappe's spot-kick to send his side through to the last 8.
